WyldRooms can be delivered in three different ways, depending on your context.

A commission is a fully managed build for private clients, delivered by our team from start to completion.

A community build is a collaborative process, typically hosted by a land-based project, where volunteers participate in the build under our guidance.

A course-based build is delivered as a structured learning programme, where participants contribute to the build while receiving hands-on training.

Each approach has different cost structures, timelines, and levels of involvement, which we can explore during an initial consultation.

A course-based WyldRoom build is a structured 10-day, hands-on learning experience delivered through a real live build on site.

Groups of 10–20 participants join the construction of a WyldRoom and learn through guided, practical involvement in the building process. A small experienced team leads the course, ensuring clear structure, safety, and continuity throughout the build. The focus is on understanding natural building techniques, materials, and sequence — working as part of a coordinated team under supervision.

Significant preparation takes place before the course begins to ensure the site and materials are ready for an efficient build period.

During the 10 days, the group typically works through to the completion of the WyldRoom up to the first coats of internal and external plaster, depending on site conditions and pace.

Catering is provided on site by the host, and accommodation is typically camping on or near the build site.

Yes — all new projects begin with an initial consultation.

This allows us to properly understand your site, your needs, and the most appropriate way to bring a WyldRoom into being for you.

The consultation is a paid session and is credited against the cost of your build if you decide to go ahead.

This ensures we’re only speaking with those seriously exploring a project, rather than fielding more general enquiries.

For land-based projects, costs can be significantly reduced through collaborative workshop or course-based builds, and where suitable materials are available on site.

For fully managed commissions, however, the price tag reflects our use of high quality natural materials bought at living-wage prices from UK suppliers, and our paying our building teams well.

Beyond covering these core costs, our prices include a profit margin calculated to support our broader mission.

All this brings the prices up to what they are.

At the same time, it should be noted that our prices are competitive for bespoke garden rooms/small annexes in the UK market, which cost on average between £250–£400+/ft². In comparison, our smallest garden room comes in at around £360/ft², while our medium size costs around £230/ft², and the larger size costs around £200/ft².

We recognise that the price tag is still fairly high and will put a WyldRoom commission out of reach for most households. While we do sincerely regret this, we also acknowledge that for many people the cost will be well within range.

Our broader project aims to serve people from across a wide spectrum of economic circumstances, and our WyldRooms commissions are a high-end offering whose purpose is to fund that broader project.

For the right projects, yes.

In some cases we are open to being actively involved in crowdfunding efforts for community-based WyldRoom builds, particularly where there is strong ecological, cultural, or community value.

This may include helping shape the narrative of the project, contributing to storytelling and visual materials, and promoting the campaign through our social media channels.

This kind of involvement can be discussed during the consultation stage.

Our primary focus remains the delivery of the WyldRoom itself.

Planning requirements vary depending on the site, context, and intended use of the WyldRoom.

We're open to working across a wide range of settings, from private gardens to rural land-based projects.

For private garden builds, many projects fall under Permitted Development rights in the UK, provided they meet standard criteria around height, placement, and use.

For land-based projects, community builds, and course-based builds, planning considerations are often more nuanced.

We're particularly interested in projects that contribute positively to evolving approaches to low-impact, land-based development, and that help to expand what is possible for ecological, educational, and community-focused development.

In all cases, planning is treated as a fundamental part of the design process from the outset, and we assess viability carefully during the initial consultation before any commitment is made.

Site

• We need a fairly flat site to build on: max 7% gradient.
• It needs to be well drained.
• It needs to have good overhead clearance.
• Permitted development requirements need to be met - see question about planning permission above.

Access

No heavy machinery is used to build a WyldRoom, and all tools and materials can be carried to the build site on foot if needed.

We can, therefore, easily build in a far corner of even the most secluded garden.

We'll just need delivery access to somewhere fairly nearby for delivery of materials.

We’re based in South Devon at the moment and would ideally prefer to take on early orders in that area, but we’re definitely available for projects across the UK.

Build times vary depending on the size of the WyldRoom and the way the project is delivered.

For fully managed commissions, there are typically 2–4 weeks of active work on site, with additional time allowed for plaster drying. In total, most builds are completed within around 4–6 weeks from the start of works.

For community builds and course-based builds, the structure is different. These are usually delivered over a defined build period (typically around 10 days for course builds), with significant preparation completed in advance, and follow-up work needed for full completion.

In both cases, overall timelines also depend on site conditions, weather, access, and the specific setup of the project.

Lead times before a build begins will vary depending on demand and scheduling.

WyldRooms are built to last for at least 50 years. With good care and maintenance (as with any natural building), your WyldRoom could easily live for much longer than that.

The waterproof rubber membrane under the green roof will be the first thing to go. These have a 25 year manufacturer's warranty, but are expected to last 50 years. Replacing them is relatively simple, taking only a day or two.

We can, for a small extra cost, fit a double membrane during construction, meaning that a new roof wouldn't be needed for 50 years absolute minimum, and probably not for 100.

Everything else, if kept dry through good roof maintenance and regular use, should last indefinitely.

The oldest surviving examples of straw-bale houses are well over 100 years old now and still going strong, and there's no reason WyldRooms walls should be any shorter-lived than that.
